In a rodent unit, this river mammal is one of the largest. European beavers are larger than their American cousins, but live in smaller family groups. The body is squat and stretched to 1.3 m in length, up to about 30 cm in height, reaching 30 kg or more. Females usually are as large as or larger than males of the same age. They have short limbs with five fingers with membranes. The hind limbs are much stronger than the front. The claws are strong, twisted and flattened. The claw on second finger is split, similar to a comb. This is what the animal uses for combing beautiful and valuable fur. The fur consists of hard guard hairs and dense undercoat, reliable protection from hypothermia, as it is poorly wet in the water. That is why beavers’ fur is extremely warm and highly appreciated for making winter clothes. A layer of subcutaneous fat also saves beaver from cold and supports internal heat. The color range of wool is from chestnut to dark brown, almost black, like paws and tail.

They come out for a swim when they are fed, usually late in the afternoon. Stay very quiet and look for dark ripples and bubbles in the water, it might be a beaver ready to surface.
Magnificent piled up shelters- “lodges” are located on the riverbanks as well on the ditches in the forests. Beavers are usually stalked in the mornings and evenings close to the feeding areas or “lodges”. It is also possible to hunt the beaver from a boat on the bigger rivers.

The pine marten is a slim, agile animal that occurs throughout mainland Europe, stretching from the Ural mountains in the east to Ireland at the western edge of the species global distribution. The species belongs to the Mustelid group of animals and it is related to wildlife such as the stoat, otter and badger.

They have a rich fur coat, typically dark brown in colour and a distinguishing creamy-yellow throat patch which extends beyond the front legs. From this, the second name of the marten came - «zheltodushka» or «yellow bib».

Adult pine marten are about the size of a domestic cat, with the males slightly larger as compared to the female pine martens. This elusive creature is characterized by a soft, silky fur and long bushy tail that can be half the length of their body. The body length is 34-57 cm., tail length 17-29 cm.

Pine marten are habitat specialists, requiring forest or scrub habitat to exist in an area. Semi-retractable claws help in climbing and running on branches of trees; highly sensitive ears for detecting prey; sharp teeth for cutting through meat and flesh The species is primarily active at night.
