Kamchatka moose is famous for its size all over the world, as well as the Kamchatka bear. This is a subspecies of the East Siberian moose (Alces alces pfizenmayeri). Its habitat is the Northern part of the Kamchatka Peninsula near the Penzhina river, near the Chukchi Peninsula. Elk is also common in Central Kamchatka. The weight of trophy horns reaches 25-40 kg, the scope - from 150 to 175 cm.
Moose moved into the upper mainland of the Kamchatka Peninsula thousands of years ago. The main concentration of moose is found in the northern part of the peninsular, in Penshina valley and the surrounding areas. Population estimates confirm there are about 2,500 animals in the north and another 2,000 in the central part of the peninsula.
HUNTING SEASON
During the mating period for any month the bull conducting hectic life and a little feeding, in a short time loses the entire stock of accumulated fat. Already in late October bulls become unrecognizably skinny compared to August. Later, in the first half of winter until about mid-January moose recover again, and then under the influence of severe frosts and deep snow again lose weight until mid-April, when molting begins.
Thus, the best time for proper moose hunting is a short-term (not more than a week) period before and at the beginning of the rut, allowing to shoot the oldest bulls which interfere with the normal rut, in order to discourage adult sexually mature males.
HUNTING METHODS
In September-October, we operate hiking hunts during the moose roar: tracking, stalking, calling moose. Kamchatka Moose rut time from September 10 to October 10.
In November-December the whole area is under snow cover. A hunter with outfitter runs long distance by snowmobile looking for tracks of a male moose. Outfitter usually drives a snowmobile, and the hunter is behind him. It is important to think of a very warm hunting gear. As soon as fresh tracks are found, the hunter stalks the moose in snow shoes or on skis.
